S. Stefano Belbo, where it is located
Italian town in Piedmont, province of Cuneo, and part of the Langhe. It has a rich history dating back to ancient times. One can find roots going back to Roman times but also considerable influence from different cultures, a nice mix of traditions and stories to discover.
It lies on the banks of the Belbo stream, a tributary of the Tanaro. It is the easternmost municipality in the province of Cuneo. To reach it, coming from Alba, you will have about 25 km by car. Leaving the highway at Asti Est, you must drive about 30 km.
It is still part of the Langhe but is on the border with the Monferrato area.
Are you looking for a unique experience to discover the lesser-known and more authentic Langhe? Do you love amazing views, authentic flavors, and extraordinary wines off the beaten path? Santo Stefano Belbo is one of the outposts of the upper Langa. If you choose a SlowDays Tour in Santo Stefano Belbo, you will find all this and more.
S. Stefano Belbo: historical background
The ancient village of Santo Stefano Belbo is rooted in Roman times. The first historical traces of this village date back to 1001, when it was owned by Olderico Manfredi, a figure of historical significance. Over the following centuries, S. Stefano Belbo was at the center of numerous events that shaped its current shape.
In particular, the territory of Santo Stefano Belbo has been the subject of divisions and changes in ownership. At one point, it was divided between the marquises of Saluzzo and Busca, creating a context of political complexity. Interestingly, the portion belonging to the marquises of Busca was almost immediately ceded first to the municipality of Asti in 1188 and later, in 1196, to Bonifacio, marquis of Monferrato. These property transfers reflect the medieval dynamics of the time.
Over the centuries, the territory of Santo Stefano Belbo has seen a succession of feudal lords who have influenced its culture and daily life. However, a significant moment occurred in 1613, when the territory came under the rule of the Savoy family. This dynasty left an indelible imprint on the Piedmont region and also on all of Italy.
When you visit Santo Stefano Belbo, you will see traces of millennial history. Its events, from Roman times to Savoy rule, are a fascinating tale of Italy’s past, and its historic structures, such as the medieval tower and the Sacred Heart parish church, represent cultural treasures to be preserved and admired.

The town of Santo Stefano Belbo has a very ancient history; shortly after 1000, there was already a settlement. Its strategic location in the Belbo Valley justifies this. We know there must have been a military fortification on the road connecting Asti and Alba with the Riviera di Ponente in Liguria.
We know that a congregation of Benedictine monks introduced the cultivation of vines on their estates.
The ruins of one of the towers tell us of the existence of an ancient castle.
