Fall in love for Langhe Piedmont, northern region of Italy
Piedmont Itinerary to discover a new destination to choose from. Travels in the Langhe are inviting in every season. Autumn offers wine and truffles, and the changing colors of the vine leave a spectacle on the Langhe hills!
You can choose the Langhe Roero Monferrato area for a vacation of relaxation, good food, and wine. Piedmont in Italy will surprise you.
For the autumn of each year, Piedmont focuses on immersion in nature, guaranteeing natural and slow vacations. The idea is to offer visitors relaxation, outdoor activities, and serenity. We think this territory we have always loved has much to deliver, and we can’t wait to prove it! With a series of new modes and extra services.
We are spoilt for choice! Your trip to the Langhe has a lot to offer: villages, castles, and vineyards, not to mention excellent food and wine.
But let’s try to go into details…

WHERE IS THE LANGHE?
Vineyard-covered hills as far as the eye can see, villages, farmhouses and centuries-old wine cellars, medieval towers, and castles… but where is the Langhe?
The reference point is Alba, an hour’s drive from Turin and less than 2 hours from Milan. The Langhe is about 3 hours from Bologna.
The territory is extensive, so using a car or motorbike is strongly recommended for visiting them. Alba can be easily reached by train from Turin, but if you want to get to know the villages of the Langhe, you have to go up into the hills.
The Langhe-Roero and Monferrato wine-growing landscapes in Piedmont became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 and included:
- The Langa of Barolo: no less than 3,000 hectares of land devoted to the production of Nebbiolo, which, in the silence of the cellars, will give rise to Barolo wine. The municipalities of the “Langa del Barolo” are: Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Diano d’Alba, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Novello and Serralunga d’Alba. Here, you can photograph the most beautiful and best-known views, and in autumn, you can enjoy the stunning foliage of the vineyards. Don’t miss the cedar of Lebanon, the monumental tree that is a symbol of love, and the colorful Barolo chapel, an original and cheerful monument in the middle of the beautiful vineyards of the Ceretto winery
- The hills of Barbaresco: the younger brother of Barolo wine, but no less appreciated. Barbaresco wine differs from Barolo in the years of aging, but when it comes to villages and landscapes, this area has nothing to envy the more famous Langhe area of Barolo. Small towns such as Neive and Barbaresco are worth a visit. We recommend the Barbaresco Tower and the Barbaresco regional wine shop, where wine from nearby cellars is tasted daily.
- The Castle of Grinzane Cavour: back in the Langa del Barolo. According to Unesco, this monument represents a special mention within the wine-growing landscapes.
The castle of Grinzane Cavour is home to the Enoteca Regionale del Piemonte (Piedmont wines, regional shop). Still, inside, you can dive into the history of Piedmont and Italy through wine. It was, in fact, Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, who lived there in the 19th century, creating a center for research and experimentation on wine that gave rise to the great red wines of Piedmont.
An exciting tour you can organize with your car in the colder months is the one I described in the article Castles of the Langhe: An Itinerary of Discovery in One Day.
During the good season, you can think about organizing a tour of the Langhe castles by bike; an e-bike is recommended. Here, I leave you an idea for a day on an e-bike with a packed lunch and a wine tasting.
The Langhe gives you many emotions in any season. Winter creates magical landscapes among the vineyards, spring covers the hills with excellent color, summer allows you to enjoy many hours of light to discover big benches and paths among the vineyards, and finally, autumn will let you find out all the shades of red, even the most unexpected ones!
It is said that a journey always has three central moments: when you dream, when you live it, and when you then remember it. Let’s start dreaming about it…with some concrete ideas! Piedmont Holidays, and a focus in Langhe for your vacation destination.

Things to do in Langhe, Italy, discovering its VILLAGES
Alba and its surroundings: Wandering through the villages of the Langhe!
What a beautiful month, October! Mild temperatures, neither too hot nor too cold, the beginning of autumn, with its warm colors and the fall of the leaves from the tired trees.
In this season, I always recommend spending as much time as possible outdoors, not least because with winter approaching, we will have time to stay at home and doze off.
Here are 6 of the most beautiful villages around Alba between Roero and Langhe:
- Guarene and Guarene Castle. The small village is an absolute delight, with quiet streets, beautiful, elegant buildings, and above all, the beautiful castle of Guarene. A few years ago, an extraordinary renovation transformed it into a 5-star luxury resort (no less!) with a spa and a wonderful park—a prevalent location for weddings and events and perfect for a super-romantic getaway. Don’t miss a dinner at the La Madernassa Guarene restaurant – chef Mammoliti received his second Michelin star last year!
- The Magliano Alfieri castle has an excellent pizzeria with an extraordinary view over the Langhe and Roero area. We recommend a fantastic restaurant in the castle of Magliano Alfieri, unbeatable in romance, that of chef Stefano Paganini.
- The Christmas markets of Govone take place in the beautiful castle of Govone. This marvelous Christmas market is held every year (except for 2020). It was born without too many pretensions, in the shadow of the much more famous markets of Alto Adige, but it has carved out increasingly ample space for itself and is now a national success. The small village is well worth a visit, even outside the Christmas period, but certainly on the weekends before Christmas, Father Christmas Govone’s house is an unmissable destination!
- Are La Morra restaurants, Langhe wine cellars, and the wonderful Belvedere la Morra all that? Oh no! La Morra contends with Barolo for the record of the most visited village in the Langhe. In our opinion, it is also the liveliest, especially in the evening, but don’t tell the people of Barolo that! Restaurants in La Morra? The Osteria Veglio is typical and has an excellent quality/price ratio; La Fontanazza has a fantastic view and a menu between refined and traditional, and the pizzeria PerBacco of exceptional quality; the Osteria More e Macine with excellent dishes presented with care.
- Barolo! Here we are in the heart of the Langhe, where it all began. Here is the headquarters of the historic Marchesi di Barolo winery, where, it is said, Barolo was born! But was the village or the wine born first? Please choose one of our wine tours to find out!
- Serralunga d’Alba Castle, in our opinion, unmissable! The visit is guided only, but we assure you it is well worth it. It is a beautiful visit for a dive straight into the Middle Ages. What about Serralunga d’Alba restaurants? We recommend the Trattoria Schiavenza or the Osteria Tre Case, but you will also find some noteworthy wine bars.
